When someone enters an area equipped with one of these sensors, the device will activate and the Frontpoint Hub can send you a mobile notification. If the system is armed, it will also sound an alarm and notify the monitoring center. The best home security systems for renters are wireless, like the DIY systems offered by Frontpoint.
Although many systems use wireless components that you install with double-sided tape, some high-end systems use components that require professional installation. This five-piece home security kit includes a HomeBase, keypad, two entry sensors for windows or doors, and one motion sensor with 100-degree coverage up to 30 feet away. It's super easy for one person to set up on their own, and the components are lightweight enough that you can opt to use the included adhesive strips instead of screws for a no-damage alternative. You can set your own custom security modes in the eufy Security app, and adjust the sensitivity of the motion sensors to only detect humans, and not animals — super helpful if you have pets. You'll get instant alerts on your phone any time a breach or motion is detected, and there are no monthly fees. However, you can opt into the newly offered 24/7 professional monitoring that'll alert authorities when your alarm is triggered.
What does a renter need in a home security system?
We're disappointed to learn that Frontpoint re-introduced contracts. Youcan still pay month-to-month, but you have to callFrontpoint to get this option, which costs more than the contract plan at around $60 a month. We tested, mystery shopped, did extensive research, and grilled security brand reps to select the top security systems for renters. Another feature that makes ADT ideal for renters is the fact that you can take the system with you when you move.
Some security brands don't let their equipment mix and mingle with other brands. For renters, this means you might be able to integrate the Abode system with equipment provided by your landlord—like a smart door lock or smoke alarm. Head over to the "move portal" on the Frontpoint app or web dashboard and request a free moving package. You'll get boxes for safely transporting your equipment, a bunch of new adhesive stickers and optional screws, window decals, and a yard sign.
Why should I get a home security system for renters?
Those who live in rental houses or larger apartments can select packages that include up to 14 components. While the contents of each package vary, all of them include the Frontpoint Hub and Keypad that tie the system together and link it with the 24/7 monitoring center. And renters who prefer to assemble a custom system can choose their own components. Frontpoint wireless systems link most battery-powered products to a central control Hub using Z-Wave technology. Z-Wave is a communication protocol that uses less power than Wi-Fi and has a longer range than Bluetooth connections. And if you’re concerned about the hassle of constantly replacing batteries in your components, don’t be.
"Home security" doesn't always mean catching burglars or vandals in the act, or keeping an eye on other potential intruders to your home, though. Apartment security systems — particularly entry sensors — are also really beneficial for households with kids. These sensors are installed on windows and doors , and they sound an alarm when the entry point is opened, ensuring that you always know if your little one is getting into trouble that they shouldn't be. With smart safety systems, you could add things like smart lights, smart locks, smart temperature sensors, and more. Some of these upgrades might require the approval of your landlord, but they are worth discussing.

DIY, of course, means “do it yourself.” These systems can be unpacked and set up in a matter of minutes by virtually anyone. No carpentry, wiring, or significant alterations to your doors or windows are required. Additionally, devices that connect via Wi-Fi, such as security cameras and smart door locks, can be hacked to gain access to your home network. A skilled hacker can then use your Wi-Fi devices and other network resources to carry out Distributed Denial of Service attacks against larger networks. Perhaps even more disturbing is the idea of some stranger monitoring video from your indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Operating on a dedicated cellular channel, the system sends a wireless signal via an encrypted transmission to the monitoring center in the event of an emergency.
